Los Campesinos! - “You! Me! Dancing!”

6:16 on 6/16

Happy yet? How about now? Yep. That’s the stuff.

Can’t stop, won’t stop ever smiling because of Los Campesinos!

INXS - “Need You Tonight” (3:01)

This song is a t-shirt slogan machine (and I like it):
“The 21st Century is yesterday”
“You’re one of my kind”
“Can’t think at all”

Lightspeed Champion - “Sweetheart” (4:39)

from Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You. Starts off pretty slow then breaks into what I love starting around the three minute mark.

You’re allowed to play this one over and over if you like.

Voxtrot - “Stephen” (3:27)

“But I miss reaching for the lasers…”

If you haven’t heard of Voxtrot, here is my guide to the best experience:

  1. Ignore their debut album. If you start with the album you’ll likely miss a lot of what is good about the band.
  2. Pick up the three EPs that came out before this album. Their titles are: Raised by Wolves (2005); Your Biggest Fan (2006); and Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives (2006).
  3. Combine the three EPs in any order and pretend that it’s the debut album.
  4. You now have 11 tracks, where at least 6 are solid singles.
  5. Play The Start of Something on repeat for hours, and pretend you’re five years younger.
  6. You’re welcome.

Andrew W.K. - “Ready to Die” (2:55)

Not from the song, but a quote- case and emphasis as original,
“Why are you pretending that today doesn’t matter? Do not ignore it! IT MATTERS! What are we trying to prove? These are the actual DAYS OF OUR LIVES! YOU ARE LIVING YOUR LIFE TODAY! Everything you are doing, saying, and thinking! This is not a temporary time that we can mess around with! This is the whole thing! What are you going to do with it? What are you going to do in this crucial moment? This is serious! This is no exaggeration! It sounds dramatic and extreme? THIS IS EXTREME!!! This is THE day! This is TODAY! We have never been given today before! We hold it all in our hands! Go find a calendar and look at the date - whatever day it is, realize this: this day will never come again! There will never be another one of today! It is a one shot deal! What are you doing with it? What are you doing with your life? What are you doing TO your life? Imagine what other people would do with your life! Why do we waste our energy on stupid problems that mean nothing? Why do we waste it? Imagine what someone would give if they could live just one day in your life! How are you treating your life? Do even more! Take your starting point and push past it! Find something that is really hard and that you don’t think you’ll ever be able to accomplish - better yet, find something that will benefit more things and people than just you, and devote yourself to it! And don’t give up!”

Good Shoes - “The Way My Heart Beats” (just over 2 minutes long)

This is the first track off of the new Good Shoes album, No Hope, No Future. The British may never invent a form of music before the United States, but they sure do perfect the genre once they get ahold of it.

I will also admit that it took me a while to like them. It might take a while for you, as well. If you dig this track you might also like “Never Meant to Hurt You” off of their previous album. Lightspeed Champion also did a great cover of it.

These New Puritans - “Hologram” (2:23)

This is the lightest track on the new album, which is a great album. Their previous album is also worth a listen and buy.

While this track doesn’t illustrate it so well, if you were to split time into another stream at the point where Massive Attack dropped the ball and lost everyone, imagine this as the band that rightfully took over for them.

Martha Wainwright - “Far Away” (2:56)

I know that we’ve never met before
But that was then, and now I need you more
Is someone here keeping the score?

Inspired by a friend whose name I won’t identify, I’m posting this track as tribute to that awesome thing that is  weird, awkward and uncertain love.

That link goes to a really old project in Diaryland that I stopped updating when everything in my heart stopped getting dramatic and sad. The idea for that one is an always-on webcam in Tokyo (which still works to this day) that I could watch the sun rise half a world away on, and a lyric snippet when something was emotionally terrible. It originally started in 1998 and then was completely erased and started again in 2002.

It was Diaryland, I was also the doug.diaryland.com, and whatever you see in either link is up to 12 years old. It all existed before anyone reading this existed in my world, so a) let’s see you bring out some diaries from you when were 15/16 and so very public, b) any part you’re interested in is going to be claimed to be fiction by me.

Also, the other point of this audio post, Martha Wainwright is so amazing- if that first line of the song doesn’t win you over, you’re not listening hard enough.

Here’s a good track about an unwelcome guest from the past and the choices one makes in life.

“So look one more time at my love and you’ll find that it’s here to stay
Your stupid lines and the thoughts just behind are not working today”
