Things have settled down after a couple days of being featured at the top of the Tumblr Directory for Photographers, so I’m doing as I said and here’s what I’ve found so far:
- I assuming other directory groups such as comedians and musicians are more popular than photographers, but with the image I have at the top of the directory and the kind of photos I I’ve been posting lately, the directory consistently adds roughly 130 new followers to I Make Photos Daily each day, out of roughly 400 new visitors (so, a new followers every ten minutes or so, but almost four times as many people look). If I were to change up my photo subject matter, it’d probably improve the ratio.
- The majority of new followers appear to be brand new users to Tumblr, (I’d guess 3/5). Those who are not new tend to skew heavily toward being photography-based tumblogs themselves.
- Where a gender is apparent in the Follower’s Tumblr, I’d guess that roughly 3/4 of the new followers are female, and at 1/3 appear to be speaking Japanese on their tumblogs.
- The appearance of popularity breeds further popularity. Or “if they jump off a bridge, would you?” The answer appears to be a strong yes, yes most would. Being in the directory brings new followers who believe they’re seeing something probably more interesting than they are. So they feel very free with the “like”s and reblogs, which shows others an additional layer of popularity, which only re-enforces the first impression that they’re seeing something worth following.
If anything unusual or even half-interesting happens in the next couple days I’ll let you know, but so far I’m not famous, just a little popular and curious what (if anything) this leads to.
