“There are two ways you can expand your knowledge—through books and by gaining the confidence of fellow-magicians who will explain these things. Ricky to a large degree gets his information from books—old books—and then when he performs for magicians they want to know, ‘Where did that come from?’ And he’s appalled that they haven’t read this stuff. So there’s this large body of magic lumpen who really don’t understand Ricky’s legacy—his contribution to the art, his place in the art, his technical proficiency and creativity. They think he’s an élitist and a snob.”
Very apt for modern times. Considered a snob because he’s done the actual research on a subject, rather than just heard the cover version and assumed it the original artist. (So to speak.)
I’m getting more comfortable posting things that I know are beyond most people’s attention spans. The reason is simple: there is a massive chasm between “seeing something” and understanding something and we shall have no qualms about sharing what we’re interested in.
That is the purpose of this Tumblog, after all. It’s in the header.
