Not at all a song about love, but when I first heard it I chose to interpret it as so and it stuck that way for me.

It’s worth clicking through for the full quote. So much of my drive and ambition in this life has been a direct result of growing up with limited means. It’s important to know where you’ve come from but more important to remember to never return.

Everyone loves the Horatio Alger version of life. What they don’t realize is that these transformations begin in shame, because poverty feels shameful.

Happy Valentine’s Day, 104 Street!

The Edmonton artist Adriean Koleric, commonly known as thinkITEM, let me take over his twitter feed for a couple days.

Merging my love of his “steal/copy/repeat” approach and my ongoing learnings in generative art, I decided to make a unique art piece for each of his Twitter followers composed of 6000 hearts forming his robot mask. The pieces all look similar, but are actually made entirely of variation.

More than seven hundred pieces of unique art were made in my “cutieITEM” project, responses were very overwhelmingly positive, and I had a lot of fun.

Additional note: The original plan was to tweet each person their piece. One recipient didn’t recognize that they were entirely different pieces of art, or recognize that “unique” and “your own” meant just that, and accused me of “ambush marketing” and being “#lame,” which really killed the energy as the delivery to followers was only roughly 10% complete. Nearly seventy pieces were sent directly to followers with the remaining put in a gallery for people to claim.

As people claim their piece, it is removed from the gallery.
